ABSTRACT. A revision of Clematis (Ranunculaceae) in Taiwan is presented. Two new taxa, C. chinensis var. tatushanensis and C. tashiroi var. huangii, are described and a new distributional record for the Taiwan flora, C. pseudootophora, is reported. A key to the species of Clematis in Taiwan, distribution maps and taxonomic descriptions of the new taxa (including C. chinensis var. chinensis and C. tashiroi var. tashiroi) are also provided.
Keywords: Clematis; Clematis chinensis var. tatushanemis; C. pseudootophora; C. tashiroi var. huangii; Key; Ranunculaceae; Taxonomy; Taiwan.
INTRODUCTION
Clematis is one of the largest genera in the Ranunculaceae. It is distinguished from other genera by the opposite leaves and usually viney habit (Chang et al., 1980; Tamura, 1995; Yang et al., 1996; Wang and Bartholomew, 2001). According to Liu and Hsieh (1976), Yang and Huang (1986, 1992, 1995), Yang et al. (1991, 1996) and Wang and Xie (2007), there are 20 taxa (including 15 species, 2 subspecies, and 3 varieties) in Taiwan.
This paper presents a revision of the genus Clematis in Taiwan. Two new taxa, C. chinensis var. tatushanensis and C. tashiroi var. huangii, are described and a new distributional record for the Taiwan flora, C. pseudootophora, is presented.
Clematis chinensis var. chinensis, usually found below 1,000 m throughout the island, has 5-leaflets. The new variety, C. chinensis var. tatushanensis, with 7, 9, 11, 15
or more leaflets, is found only below 500 m in the central part of the western Taiwan.
Clematis tashiroi var. tashiroi has dark purple flowers, while the new variety C. tashiroi var. huangii has yellow flowers. The latter variety was named as a cultivar, i.e. C. tashiroi 'Yellow Flower', by Lu et al. (2001).
Clematis pseudootophora was found in Ssuyuan Saddle area and is a new record for Taiwan. Formerly, C. pseudootophora was known to occur in central and eastern China (Provs. Guizhou, Hunan, Hubei, Jiangxi, Zhejiang and Fujian).
To account for these new additions to the flora of Taiwan, a key to all taxa of Clematis on this island (23 taxa, i.e. 16 species, 2 subspecies and 5 varieties) and their synonyms, as well as line drawings, color photographs, distribution maps and taxonomic descriptions of the new taxa (C. chinensis var. chinensis and C. tashiroi var. tashiroi) are also provided.

I collected sterile materials of Clematis chinensis var. tatushanensis for the first time in December 1984 (Yang 937, TNM). Flowering specimens were available in 1985. I noted its resemblance to C. chinensis var. chinensis, but the leaflet number, 7-11 or more, is different from the latter. Since then, I found more populations of this new taxon. They have the same characters of pinnately to bipinnately compound leaves with elliptic leaflets. They also have fruit tails with golden bearded hairs and are readily distinguishable from C. chinensis var. chinensis. In addition, foliage of C. chinensis var. chinensis usually turns black when dried but that of the new taxon does not always turn black.

Although var. huangii was published as a new cultivar (Lu et al., 2001), it is found frequently in the field in Taiwan. I therefore propose it formally at the variety level. The varietal epithet commemorates Prof. Dr. T.C. Huang (TAI) in honor of his lifetime study of the flora of Taiwan.
